LW
solo performance - 2022~
LW is an electromagnetic sonic performance and a – partly controlled, partly uncertain – exploration of radio waves and interferences. Based on a live sampling setup, it attempts to momentarily organise the chaos of frequencies and to bring up unstables and tranistory patterns of music, before they vanish again into the thickness of noise.
LW stands for “Long Waves” – as in the radio long waves – a range of the frequency spectrum that is now abandoned and free of media and industry usage. It remains, instead, as an electromagnetic wilderness, a technological interstice where sonic experimentations can roam free.
The propensity of these low frequencies to interact with everyday electronics and electrical apparatuses, generating interferences and statics, is an opportunity for appropriating what was once unwanted and turn it into a musical material.
LW extends the research carried out with Nicolas Montgermont and Feral Bands into a more personal space.
Freed from the rather “phenomenological” approach of the duo, LW uses these radio noises as a matter for something more directly musical: electronic, rhythmic, harmonic… But all the while knowing that this desire for music will certainly crash into the unpredictability of waves.
On this line of tension between music and something organic, autonomous, the project was elaborated around a setup – with a sampler/sequencer as its core – that allows both the exploration of radiations and the organisation of sounds.
LW is a composed and improvised performance, the result of which varies with the place and waves going through it.
