Stridulations is the result of an encounter between recording and instrumentation, composition and improvisation: field recordings of animal communications in dialogue with the sounds produced by the electromagnetic field of fluorescent tubes, manipulated with electric dimmers and filtered by an analog sound system.

Through performances and concerts between 2014 and 2017, the creation developed by aggregating new recordings collected while traveling and confronting them with an evolving system, constructed from neon lights, dimmers, resistors, and coils to capture and sonify an electromagnetic flux that was partly controlled, partly random.

The album was released in 2018 on Discrepant with an original cover design by Julie Coutureau.

Sound artist Pali Meursault has developed a unique method of composition. He makes field recordings of animals, then sets them in dialog with a series of fluorescent light tubes that he has ‘sonified’. This is done in keeping with an overarching aesthetic principle of ‘deconstructing binary oppositions between nature and machine, bio- and anthropo-phony’. Groovy. It’s a cool sound, too.
